Garbage to SBRC drops

THE VOLUME OF WASTE going to the government-contracted Sustainable Barbados Recycling Centre (SBRC) has dropped from 1 000 tons daily, to 350 tons since government imposed a tipping fee on waste haulers.

General manager of the Vaucluse, St Thomas facility, Tony Parris, said yesterday since the controversial $25 fee was imposed last year, there was evidence “of a severe drop in business” for people involved in the business of waste disposal, with 650 tons of waste now “going all over the island in a very unregulated manner”.

Parris was one of several participants in the final day’s session of a workshop . . . to generate dialogue on effective green economic strategies for Barbados, among other objectives.
