SIX NATIONAL hockey players will be departing the island today for a three-month high performance training programme at three of the top hockey clubs in Argentina.

Head coach of the men’s hockey team, Dominic Hill, said it was the first time Barbadian players were given an opportunity to travel abroad for such a prestigious training programme and he was certain it would be extremely beneficial to their skills.

“Argentina is very strong in hockey; they rank sixth in the world . . . .  The purpose of the high performance training is to be able to play and train in an environment which is at a higher standard than what it is here in the local domestic league. They will be playing and training full time,” he said.

Among the players attending the programme are Laurando Davis and Che Warner, who both play for Empire. They will be attending Club San Fernando, Buenos Aires. Che Roach of Avengers and Akeem Rudder of UWI Blackbirds will be training at the University Club of Rosario. Both Mario Moore of YMCA and Paul Gill of All Stars will be at the University Club of Cordoba. (RG)
