BARBADOS LOOK SET to surpass last year’s performance as the medal tally at the 2016 Flow CARIFTA Games reached 15.

With four gold, five silver and six bronze, the total is one less than the 16 won last year in St Kitts. Several Barbadian athletes are entered in events this evening and are in strong medal contention.

The lone medal in this morning’s session at the Grenada Athletics Stadium was delivered by Ashantia Phillips in the Under-20 girls’ high jump.

Phillips won with 1.73 metres and fouled out while attempting a personal best 1.76 metres. She easily cleared all of her attempts up to that 1.76 metre mark and beat Jamaica’s Britny Kerr who also cleared 1.73 metres. Rechelle Meade of Anguilla was third with 1.65 metres.

Anderson Greaves finished fifth (6.88m) and Ondre Callender 14th (6.28m) in the Under-18 Boys’ Long Jump. Denvaughn Whymns of the Bahamas won with 7.16 metres while Guadeloupe’s Enzo Hodebar was second with 7.09 metres. Finishing third was Jamaica’s Shakwon Coke who had a best of 7.05 metres.

Hannah Connell advanced to the final of the Under-18 Girls’ 100 metres hurdles after she ran a personal best 14.23 seconds in the preliminaries. Jamaica’s Joda Campbell leads the list of finalists with the fastest time of 13.70 seconds.

The preliminaries of the Under-18 Boys’ 110m hurdles and the Under-18 4×400 metre Relays were scrapped and those events will be straight finals.
