Suicide now major scourge

SUICIDE IS A “major” issue in Barbados, says family life consultant Haynesley Griffith.

And while there is a dearth of statistics on the rate of suicide here, Griffith said the number of attempts is such that some intervention is needed.

To that end, Griffith is hosting a seminar on suicide intervention and prevention on April 30 at the Ellerton Wesleyan Holiness Church, St George, on April 30 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

He said that around 800 000 people across the world commit suicide annually at a rate of one every 40 seconds. Closer to home, Griffith said Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago had high suicide rates. (YB)
