PRAYERS COULD NOT bring back the lives lost or restore collapsed buildings in last week’s earthquake in Ecuador, but on Wednesday night they most definitely gave comfort to 50 Ecuadorian students studying at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus.
The coastal area of Ecuador was hit by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake on Saturday leaving a death toll so far of about 600, with over 7 000 reported injured to date and close to 200 still missing.
In the two-hour relief prayer service organised by members of the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship and the UWI Guild of Students, marathon prayers were offered for the people of Ecuador as fellow UWI students reached out in comfort to their colleagues from the South American country.
While moving prayers were said from the platform and the strains of uplifting music swept across Lecture Theatre 1, teary-eyed Ecuadorian students, who are all teachers, held hands and bowed their heads, immersed in the outpouring of support. (GC)
