FAITH BASED ORGANISATIONS from across the island have been called to join the fight against Zika by the University of the West Indies (UWI)Zika Task Force.

Pan-American Health Organisation (PAHO) representative Dr Godfrey Xuereb and UWI deputy principal and Zika Task Force chair Professor Clive Landis engaged a number of religious leaders at PAHO’s head offices for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean this morning.

They were brought up to speed on how they could tackle the mosquito-borne disease from a community perspective.

Landis implored the church leaders not to be killed into a false sense of security by the recent lull in Zika cases.

Instead, he insisted they prepared for when the rainy season came and the mosquitoes population increased.

Also discussed were plans for how faith based organisations can control mosquito populations and their role in the rehabilitation of Zika patients. (AD)
