BARBADOS IS MOVING AHEAD with the development of a National Park stretching from Archer’s Bay in St Lucy to Consett Bay, St John.
The 7 300 hectares of land represent 17 per cent of the island’s total land space, and yesterday Prime Minister Freundel outlined plans for developing the area when he launched the Barbados System of Parks and Open Spaces at the headquarters of the Natural Heritage Department in Sturges, St Thomas.
The National Park encompasses inland areas such as the Flower Forest in St Joseph; and Welchman Hall Gully, Jack-in-the-Box Gully and Harrison’s Cave in St Thomas.
At a ceremony attended by parliamentarians, diplomats, conservationists, children from schools in the St Thomas catchment area of the park as well as residents of surrounding communities, the Prime Minister said the launch was yet another signal of Barbados’ intention to continue along its path of sustainable development.
