‘Take a stand’ on sex crimes

AN OPPOSITION SENATOR has called for Government to take a position on the issues of prostitution and buggery in Barbados.

The Barbados Labour Party’s Wilfred Abrahams, during his contribution on the Trafficking in Persons Prevention Bill, 2016 yesterday in the Upper Chamber, said it would be a very difficult conversation to have but one that was much needed.

“We say it is wrong. We say it is illegal, but the same mouths that utter those words are farcical because the reality is if prostitution is a crime in Barbados, then the police should be clamping down on prostitution. But the hotbed of prostitution is Bridgetown – homosexual and transvestite prostitution occurs in Pinfold Street [yards away from Central Police Station] . . . . It exists in Crumpton Street right outside of Harrison College, and it exists in Bush Hill right opposite Hastings Police Station,” he said.

Though Abrahams did not voice his stance on whether prostitution should be legalised and buggery decriminalised, the senator suggested that unless a serious effort was made to address the matters, the lives of people would be at risk. (SDB Media)
