Imported wings ruffle BAS boss

THE BARBADOS AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY (BAS) is up in arms against a wholesaler who has reportedly been flooding the market with chicken wings imported independently of the authorised importer, the Barbados Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (BADMC).

And chief executive officer of the BAS James Paul is asking the Ministry of Trade, the Customs Department and the Ministry of Agriculture for an explanation.

At a hastily convened news conference at BAS headquarters yesterday, Paul said the matter was brought to his attention by poultry producers who recently advised that the normal quota of chicken they supplied to supermarkets had been drastically reduced as a result of the imports. The problem for the local suppliers became more acute over the last four or five days, according to Paul.  (GC)
