Blackbirds ‘A’ almost perfect

UWI BLACKBIRDS ‘A’ are one game away from a perfect 2016 netball season.

The first-time double-crown queens advanced to 9/0 and a maximum 45 points by scoring a clinical 41-35 victory over Pine Hill Dairy St Barnabas when Division 1 action continued on Wednesday night at the Netball Stadium.

Scoring machine Shonica Wharton led the champions once again with 35 goals from 41 attempts and Rieah Holder added six of 11 on a night that was made easier with Barbados defender Shonette Bruce absent from St Barnabas’ line-up, while Jeneice Clarke and Samantha Browne started on the bench.

Even so, it took two minutes and 29 seconds before the Blackbirds opened the scoring in a match which stuttered to a finish with quarter scores of 9-6, 20-16 and 32-21. St Barnabas’ coach Julie Phillips opted to play a team comprising five of the current Under-21 Barbados trialists. Only centre Cherese Seale and goal shooter Shekira Boxill were not of that age.
