WHAT A WEEK it was last week! It was a week when three people collapsed and died in public places. It was a week when a young man tried to enter the District ‘A’ Court precincts with a loaded 9mm gun. It was a week when a passenger acted bizarrely while on board an Air Canada flight from Pearson International Airport in Toronto to Grantley Adams International Airport.
I am very saddened to have learnt about the sudden deaths of the three people and I express my deepest sympathy to their relatives.
I hope that as a result of the gun incident at the court, those in authority will take a serious look at security in Barbados.
What would have happened if the guard had not challenged the young man if he had been properly attired to get past the security checkpoint? Only God knows. I do not think that we are taking security around our courts and places of public interest seriously. Right now what can guards do to protect themselves and the public?
The issue of security in the courtyard at Coleridge Street must also be looked at.
There is a big risk with policemen and prison warders walking prisoners to and fro and the office staff traversing the yard. The question must now be asked: Is there adequate security with the transportation of prisoners on the court compound? I do not think so.
I think only people doing business in our courts should be allowed on the compound and not the general public. Secondly, the time is right that Government security guards should be armed.
Let us act now, please, as the incident with the young man who tried to enter the court precincts is a wake-up call.
Congratulatory function
The St Joseph Constituency Council will be hosting a function for the pupils who successfully completed the Barbados Secondary Schools’ Entrance Examination tomorrow at 3 p.m. at the Grantley Adams Memorial School.
Anniversary service
The Barbados Mothers Union will hold their anniversary service at the St Michael and All Angels Cathedral on Sunday at 4 p.m.
Evening of music
The St Philip Parish Church will be holding an evening of music at the St Philip Parish Church on Sunday at 6 p.m. Those taking part include the St Leonard’s Boys Choir and the Waterford Music and Cultural Society Band.
Missionary rally
Wesleyan Women International at the Whitepark Wesleyan Holiness Church will hold its annual missionary rally on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. There will also be three nights of crusade services from Monday to Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. nightly at the church.
Fish fry at Babylon
The St Andrew’s Parish Church will hold its annual fish fry tonight at the residence of Mr and Mrs David Thompson, Jeanfield Plains, Babylon, St Andrew, at 6 p.m.
Hard Court fry
The St Joseph Parish Church will be holding its annual fish fry on Saturday, July 16, at 6:30 p.m. on the hard court opposite the old parish church.
A taste of summer
The St David’s Anglican Church will hold A Taste of Summer, Twice as Nice – a festival of flowers, music, tea, wine and cheese under the patronage of Dr Keith Melville, celebrating Barbados 50th anniversary of Independence today, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and tomorrow, from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The evening ends with a sunset concert.
Annual suppers
The St Clement’s Church’s annual supper will be held tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at the church centre.
The St Silas Church, Waterhall, St James, will also hold its annual supper tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. on the church grounds.
Anniversary service
The Clifton Hill Moravian Church, will be having a 175th anniversary service on Sunday at 4 p.m.
Health care lectures
The James Street Methodist Church will be hosting two health care lectures, on Sunday at 5 p.m., when pharmacist David Workman will give a presentation on A Visit To The Pharmacy in which he will discuss proper use of drugs, dosing and interaction; and on Tuesday at 5:15 p.m., with a podiatrist on general foot care and common medical conditions of the lower limb.
Cathedral luncheon
The Cathedral Church of St Michael and All Angels will hold its annual Cathedral family day luncheon on Sunday, July 3, at the Deanery, Welches, St Michael, at 12:30 p.m.
