Roett rides wave up rankings

CHELSEA ROETT is making a swift rise up the world surfing rankings.

The fast improving 21-year-old Barbadian moves up 23 spots to 76th in the world after doing well at her last two contests in Mexico and El Salvador.

Roett made her mark at the World Surf League’s Los Cabos Open in Mexico and the Copa El Salvador Impresionate in El Salvador.

Surfing in El Salvador for the first time, Roett told NATION SPORT, she was not sure what to expect but was thrilled at the quality of the waves at Punta Roca.

“I am really happy with my performances. It is good to make an impression. This is one of the best waves I have surfed in a contest. I am already looking forward to going back again next year for the Copa El Salvador Impresionate,” she said.

The world ranking is achieved from points gained from top five WSL qualifying series contests.

Roett has achieved this ranking after only doing three contests for the year while most of the women ranked above her have already done five or more. As Roett competes at more contests, she is expecting her ranking to move into the top 50 giving her a good starting position for next year where she will be aiming to qualify for the World Tour.

Roett is at home preparing for a contest next month (July 17) which is the WSL’s Super Girl Pro World Qualifying Series at Oceanside in California. (MK)
