‘Protect local dollar’

GOVERNOR of the Central Bank Dr DeLisle Worrell is urging Barbadians to make the unwelcome sacrifice again as they did in 1991 to protect the value of the local dollar in the face of a slowdown in activity in the vital tourism sector.

The call has been made in his July economic letter titled: The Value Of Your Money Is A Measure Of Successful Economic Management.

Worrell compared and contrasted the fortunes of the Jamaican and Cayman currencies, with the former depreciating from a point where it was more valuable than the United States dollar to the stage where it is now valued at JAM$126 to US$1, while the latter has remained at CAY$1 to US$1.13 since the 1960s.
