Williams clinches marathon clash

WHAT A WEEKEND it was for Davis Cup players looking for payback.

Seanon Williams has settled the score, but just barely, having survived four match points and a pair of tiebreaks that went the distance before eventually outlasting Matthew Foster-Estwick in Sunday’s four-hour marathon final of the Courtesy Garage/Nissan Tennis Championships.

Playing at the Ocean View courts, the Davis Cup vet prevailed 7-6 (8), 4-6, 7-6 (8) in a titanic clash worthy of a Grand Slam final instead of a local title game played in front a dozen spectators.

It came just hours after Darian King got revenge against Victor Estrella in Colombia, and served as Williams’ own retribution for last year’s almost identical three-set thriller against Foster-Estwick at the Top 8 Invitational. (JM)
