ARTIST JACQUELINE HINDS brings to life stories of Barbadians who made the ultimate sacrifice in building the Panama Canal.
She is one of the first to bring a historical face to the Barbadian experience in Panama on canvas using accounts archived in literature.
“I wanted to add to the history what was written on the canal because a lot of the work was done with an American view rather than from the people who died to build the canal. Too much emphasis was also placed on the engineering aspect of the canal and not the human side,” said Hinds, an art and English teacher at Frederick Smith Secondary School.
She said it was something close to her because her grandfather James Lewis and great grandfather Charles Hinds worked on the canal. (SB)
