ITEMS LEFT AROUND the house on a daily basis can be used by criminals to gain entry into homes and should be carefully put away.

This is the warning from acting police public relations officer Acting Inspector Stephen Griffith who said householders needed to remove facilitators which included items that could be used to assist someone in gaining access to the home.

Griffith, who has served as crime prevention officer for several years, told the DAILY NATION that when tools were left lying around in the garage then they could be used to break into the home. He said items such as ladders would provide access to elevated areas, while palettes and barrels could be used as makeshift ladders.

While providing several safety tips, Griffith said for homes that do not have burglar bars, the windows should not be left open in areas of the house that were not occupied as access could be gained without being observed. (LK)
