Shortage of firefighters

THE alleged WITHDRAWAL OF lieu days and other allowances for fire officers for working overtime is creating a major challenge for the Barbados Fire Service.

Yesterday, sources within the service told the DAILY NATION that some stations had been operating on minimum staff because of a sick-out among officers.

The firefighters are upset about the matter related to compensation for overtime work. They believe they are being disadvantaged by not getting their lieu days or compensation.

But these claims were refuted by Acting Chief Fire Officer Lloydson Phillips, who insisted there was no problem among Fire Service personnel or related to the allowances. (AD)
