THE PLANNED CONSTRUCTION of the 15-storey Hyatt hotel which has spiralled into public controversy now rests squarely on the shoulders of Prime Minister Freundel Stuart.
According to SUNDAY SUN investigations, since 1986 all development which involves the change of use or subdivision of two acres or more of agricultural land or beachfront development has to be referred to the minister of planning for the decision of the minister. Stuart has responsibility for town planning.
That means that over the last 30 years no chief town planner has had the statutory authority to make any decision on any such development.
This revelation comes on the heels of a 29-page document recently submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office for his vetting and which comprises some concerns and objections to the construction of the hotel at Bay Street from a number of bodies. (TS)
