A RELIGIOUS MINISTER has called for the establishment of a victim/offender reconciliation programme as a part of the criminal justice system.

Dean of St Michael’s Cathedral, Dr Jeffrey Gibson, made the plea while delivering the sermon at the annual service to mark the start of the legal year 2016-2017 yesterday.

The service, which was attended by Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave, Chief Justice Sir Marston Gibson, Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite and others members of the legal fraternity, was held at the Cathedral under the theme: Celebrating A Golden Jubilee – A Call To Justice And Reconciliation.

“There’s a need for a process whereby the society can participate in the healing process . . . where victims can be relieved of their pain and offenders brought to the point where there is acknowledgement of guilt and expression of sorrow and a commitment to rehabilitation,” Gibson said. (TKS)
