Hope for closer ties with India

LEADER OF THE Opposition, Mia Mottley has high hopes for further inter state relations between India and Barbados.

Speaking to the audience gathered to welcome the newly-appointed High Commissioner of India to Barbados, Satendar Kumar, she said deeper diplomatic relations with India is vital to the island’s economy. She said it is important to build deep relations with India because as a hub, India can use Barbados’ centrality to foster greater commercial activity in the hemisphere.

Mottley added that as post-colonial states, Barbados and India have a lot of similarities that extend beyond language and legal systems that could strengthen partnerships between the two.

“We have enjoyed a number of relationships with you and your children are part of the [Barbadian] community we are relying on to build this country. But we equally held on to systems from the 1900s, so much so that our countries suffered from a resistance to change,” she stated.
