THE FEARS SPARKED by the introduction of a new tax haven’t struck some business owners in Speightstown.

Some retailers said they believed the National Social Responsibility Levy, which came into effect on September 1, would not be enough to kill the “dying” town.

Minister of Finance Christopher Sinckler announced the levy, which is applied at two per cent on some imports, during this year’s Financial Statement and Budgetary Proposals. He said the levy would realise annual revenue of $142.1 million to help fund health care services and provide a loan to the Sanitation Service Authority.

The SUNDAY SUN recently visited Speightstown where a few people walked the streets and even fewer perused the stores. (LT)
