COST-CUTTING was behind the change in venue for the opening ceremony of the David Thompson Memorial Constituency Councils’ Football Classic.
The reason was cited by Minister of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development, Steve Blackett for the switch from the Gall Hill playing field in St John, where it has been traditionally held, to the Usain Bolt Sports Complex for yesterday afternoon’s event which also featured the parade of teams.
“We may not be able to engage fully in the flair and fanfare that we would typically wish to associate with this event,” he said in his feature address.
“However the tournament’s significant contribution to the social stability of our communities and the development of our youth cannot be overstated.”
