More youth in agriculture

AGRICULTURE IS NO LONGER seen as drudgery, and the Barbadian mindset towards farming is changing.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture Esworth Reid said he was heartened by the response of youth to the sector.

“There is a burst of interest by the young people in agriculture. We do not have enough space to host all the children who sign up for the camps and programmes we offer,” he said.

He admits that he is emotional about young people having a strong interest in agriculture.

“When I went up to Haggatts, St Andrew, in April tears came to my eyes. We were working on a project with the Barbados Boy Scouts Association to plant fruit trees in that area. I was just expecting a few scouts and guides to come and take part but I saw a whole set of young people and I felt proud.” (SB)
