BARBADIAN Olivia Warden placed second in the repechage round to move back into the main event of the Under-16 division at the International Surfing Association World Junior Surfing Championships in Portugal yesterday.
With a record number of entries and time constraints, a new format has been introduced where surfers who are eliminated in either the first or second round of the main event have a chance in a repecharge with the top two rejoining the main event.
However, other Barbadians, Roma Bellori, Gabby Gittens and Giselle Allan did not benefit from the repecharge after placing third, fourth and fourth respectively.
Among the boys, Andrew Rose took ill and did not attempt to paddle out, while Kai Bourne, Yuri Scott and Caleb Rapson all placed second in their heats to advance to the repecharge.
Jacob Burke and Andrew Gill finished third and fourth respectively in their second round heats to move to the reperchage.
Yesterday’s fourth day of competition was greeted with eight to ten-foot wind blown conditions and strong currents that saw many competitors not making it out to the line-up in what could be one of the toughest days in recent junior competition history. (HG/PR)
