A MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR performing arts centre to be built on the Needham’s Point Peninsula and a new control tower at the Grantley Adams International Airport are among major infrastructural and development projects being bank-rolled by China.
Acting Prime Minister Richard Sealy detailed the proposed level of Chinese investment in Barbados through loans and grants as he congratulated the People’s Republic of China on the 67th anniversary of its founding, Monday night.
Speaking at an Accra Beach Hotel reception hosted by the Chinese Embassy, the minister disclosed that Government had already secured a US$170 million preferential loan from China’s Exim Bank to fund construction of the 450-room Marriott Sam Lord’s Castle, and rehabilitate the original historic St Philip Castle.
Ground breaking for the St Philip project has already taken place, and Sealy said Government was in discussion with a Chinese company for construction of the performing arts convention. (GC)
