ALTHOUGH A FEDERAL court in the United States ruled that employees do not have the right to wear dreadlocks, a local attorney at law is assuring Barbadians that the choice to sport any desired hairstyle is their constitutional right.
Attorney at law Arthur Holder, who has been wearing dreadlocks since 1980, said a person’s choice of hairstyle is protected under Barbados’ Constitution and this document should be referred to if they experience any challenges seeking employment.
He explained that a person’s right to wear a particular hairstyle does not infringe on the rights of another person.
“If you suffer from discrimination overtly or subtlety wearing your hair in the style that pleases you is a constitutional guarantee,” he said. (SB)
