A NUMBER OF tight contests are expected as the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) moves to wrap up nominations for its candidates for the next general election constitutionally due in 2018.

Three nominations are to be decided between Saturday and Wednesday to ensure all candidates are in place before the party’s annual general conference scheduled for the last weekend of this month at The Lester Vaughan Secondary school.

In St James South there will be a two-way race on Saturday between businesswoman Sandra Husbands, who unsuccessfully contested the seat for the party in the 2013 general elections, and newcomer Ronnie Yearwood, an attorney-at-law.

The following day the focus shifts to St John Primary school where four nominees – Hudson Griffith, Keith Rayside, Charles Griffith and Fabian Jones – will seek to win the branch members’ favour.

The nominations should wrap up on Wednesday with the contest for the St Michael North West constituency where Marsha Hinds-Layne, Neil Rowe, Mark Williams and Michael Harris will vie to be the party’s candidate in that constituency. (ES)
