ONE URBAN COMMUNITY is complaining about damaged roads with open craters following work undertaken by the Barbados Water Authority (BWA).
Residents of 2nd Avenue Arthur’s Land, Tweedside Road, St Michael spoke to the MIDWEEK NATION about a stretch of road in their district which has been left in a state of disrepair since the BWA undertook work there several months ago.
A nearby mechanic who has been living in the area since 1977 said he was fed up with the way the work was done.
“They take over two-and-a-half months to complete the job and people have to walk all around there,” he said while pointing to a small water logged track. “When children come from school they can’t go across there,” the mechanic added, pointing to an area that would normally have been used.
“Water works [BWA], they do a lot of crap,” he said, adding nothing had been done despite numerous telephone calls to the BWA complaining about the situation.
What has aggravated the problem was a nearby well . “A lot of rubbish comes down from the front road and goes straight inside that well there,” he said noting the horrible stench it created.
Another resident, Patricia Olton, said that her sinuses were severely affected because of the dust problem which the unfinished project had caused.
Patricia Olton said these two large potholes were left in the road after the Barbados Water Authority left work incomplete.
“As you can see my entire side walk is cracked up and they promised they going to come and they never come,” she said. “Them come and dig up a big hole and create another hole about two months ago.”
Olton, a resident of the area for 60 years, also complained about the water settlements which created another headache with passing vehicles splashing the dirty water.
One vehicle owner said that he was out thousands of dollars because of the badly damaged roads in the area since he had to replace various parts and get mechanical assistance.
When contacted for a comment, BWA’s Corporate Communication Specialist Joy-Ann Haigh promised she would investigate the matter. (MR)
