GOVERNMENT HAS REVISED its deficit figures for 2015/2016.

And even before there is blowback from critics of the administration, Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler has issued a pre-emptive strike, insisting there is no need to be suspicious about the new figures released following a meeting last Monday with senior staff of the ministry.

After projecting the deficit would come in at seven per cent, he announced yesterday the figure was 5.8 per cent.

Barbados’ apparent failure to bring the deficit down to a level satisfactory to the international rating agencies, among other issues, has resulted in the country facing consistent downgrades over the past four years. (WILLCOMM)
