Security concerns at Valerie high-rise

SAFETY IS A major concern of a tenant of the National Housing Corporation (NHC) complex at Valerie, St Michael.

Elijah Tafari said the corporation had failed to secure the complex, which includes a one-storey facility and two high-rise buildings. The property was being vandalised by unknown culprits, he said.

The guards who manned the complex were laid off in 2014, along with hundreds of other NHC staff. Tafari said he believed cameras should be installed inside the buildings, stating that this was more efficient than manpower.

When the DAILY NATION visited the complex recently, the team was able to enter the building without a key. A young child was seen adjusting the dead bolt on the entrance door in such a way that left it unlocked, ensuring that she could get in and out of the building while playing outside.
