Salvation Army may struggle to help as donations decline

HUNDREDS OF needy Barbadians might be forced to endure bleak Christmases in the future if the coffers of the Salvation Army’s annual Kettle Appeal continue to decline.

This year seems to be the start of a financial drought following on the news from chairman of the advisory board, Paul Bernstein, that the army was “under financial pressure” to respond to increasing requests for assistance. As a result, he has appealed to the business community and Barbadians to show greater generosity.

Bernstein’s call was made when the army distributed Christmas hampers to 800 needy Barbadians who turned up at its Reed Street, St Michael headquarters yesterday morning at the annual Christmas distribution.

Another 1 200 hampers were distributed at other Salvation Army offices around the island. (GC)
