THE 37th annual Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) netball tournament has been deemed a success by general secretary Toni Moore.

Speaking during the award ceremony at Solidarity House on Tuesday night, Moore said, however, that there was room for improvement.

“If we don’t have players we cannot sustain the tournament. Netball has been a part of the Barbados Workers’ Union for more than half of its existence. The Barbados Workers Union celebrated its 75th anniversary this year, and I should tell you that sport, youth and women are very important to the Barbados Workers’ Union,” she said.

“When the Barbados Workers’ Union introduced netball it was because we recognised we needed to create a space for women. And in order to create space for women you have to meet women at the point of their interest, and at the point of their socialisation. It was important that we had a sport that was female-dominated.” (RA)
