Driving in the dark

THE HIGHWAYS of Barbados can be long, dark and lonely places.

That is because a number of missing lights. At times, the only light on major roads such as the ABC Highway, Spring Garden Highway, St Michael, and the Ronald Mapp Highway, St Thomas, comes from the travelling vehicle.

Early morning or late night road users usually experience the enveloping darkness when traffic is sparse.

The WEEKEND NATION team investigating complaints of poor lighting took to a number of areas including the ABC Highway, specifically the stretch from the Grantley Adams International Airport to Kendal Hill, Christ Church, and found around ten unlit poles. The problem results from the large gaps between some of the poles, sometimes because the lights have been uprooted as a result of accidents. (CA)
