Bowen looking for victory

THE ONLY Barbados jockey to have ever won a championship on American soil, Rocco Bowen, is now on home turf, and is looking to win this year’s 36th Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup.

Speaking to WEEKEND SPORT, the 28-year-old who was raised in Goodland, St Michael, said how happy he was to receive a call from the Bynoe family to come and ride on Gold Cup day.

“Five years ago I would not have gotten this call, but I’m elated, and I credit the decision to return home on Gold Cup day last year as one of my best moves. I won the last race with Thismeanswar, and I didn’t want to go back without a win as the people from up north follow all the races here,” he said.

Bowen went on to add that riding at what he calls his home track, required him to up his game, and he was quick to point out that it was his best year ever, since he began his career, winning the championship with 110 wins. (LY)
