IS THE MINISTRY of Housing or its agency the National Housing Corporation (NHC) catering to the rich, middle income Barbadians or the poor?
That was the main question posed to Government in the House of Assembly by St George North Member of Parliament Gline Clarke as he contributed to the debate yesterday on a proposal by Government to compulsorily acquire 2.9 hectares or 7.1 acres of land at Brighton, St George, for housing purposes.
Clarke, a former Minister of Housing, contended that the NHC lots at Parish Land, St Philip, now on sale at almost $20 a square foot, could not be considered a solution for low income Barbadians.
Moreover, he argued that too many housing solutions offered by the state agency required prospective buyers to be earning between $3 000 and $5 000 monthly. At that rate, Clarke said too many poor people would be eliminated from homeownership. (GE)
