LESS THAN one month after creating history, Darian King has done it again. Having recorded his first win at an ATP 1000 event by toppling Nikoloz Basilashvili, he has set up a historic matchup with world No.10 Gael Monfils today at Indian Wells.
Taking to court six on Thursday night, the 24-year-old King survived set point in the second set following an early break before coming through with a courageous 7-5, 7-5 victory over the world No. 55 Georgian in the BNP Paribas Open.
The result was easily one of the best of his career, moving him into the second round of his only ATP Masters event and his first showdown with a top ten player in the world.
“I’m very happy and really stoked because he’s someone who I’ve looked up to from young and still idolise, so it’s going to be great to step out onto the court against him in front of all these fans,” said King, who also met Monfils here
in Barbados as part of the 2011 Tennis Pon De Rock exhibition series. (JM)
