AS PART OF efforts to maintain efficiency in the island’s sewage system the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) is starting a Fats, Oil and Grease or FOG Control Programme in troubled areas on the South Coast. The aim of the programme is to control FOG in the sewer lines.
On Monday, March 27 officers from the Wastewater Division, in BWA uniform and with valid BWA identification will visit homeowners and Food Service Establishments in the sewered districts of the South Coast Sewage Treatment Plant. These areas include Hastings Main Road, Peronne Gap, Rendezvous Road, Worthing Main Road, Bamboo Road, St Lawrence Gap and Dover Beach Complex.
BWA personnel will be accompanied by officers from the Environmental Department of the Ministry of Health and the Environment Protection Department who will inspect, monitor and give advice on the proper design and use of grease traps. They will also distribute correspondence and brochures on how to keep traps clean.
FOG plays a major role in damaging the sewer system and causing blockage of the sewers. Blockage then contributes to backups onto properties and overflows onto streets. FOG also coat the pumps reducing their efficiency while increasing their electrical demand and the man hours used to clean and maintain them.
