THE STARS OF Lionism shone bright on the Hilton stage when local Lions Clubs hosted their centennial black tie awards dinner at Hilton Barbados last week.

The humanitarian efforts of outstanding Lions and Leos were recognised, and Prime Minister Freundel Stuart was in attendance, delivering the feature address and doing the honours of the awards presentation. It was a night when the organisation reflected on the pioneering efforts of the late Cecil deCaires, who started the first Lions Club in Barbados. Stalwarts such as contractor and home developer Stanton Gittens, retired Superintendent of Prisons Carl Harewood, retired banker Wendell Sealy, Joan Jordan, Cynthia Hall, Ilene Tull, Margo Clarke, Nigel Williams and Leo Tamisha Graham
were honoured.

Stuart commended the men and women of the organisation, saying, they “never underestimated the value of taking an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the communities in which they lived”.
