SARGASSUM SEAWEED has again returned to the shores of Barbados.
Over the last week, swaths of the plant matter have been spotted along the East Coast.
National Conservation Commission (NCC) general manager Keith Neblett said yesterday that while he knew there were some elements of the seaweed present, he did not believe it was on the same level as 2015.
Neblett admitted he was not sure what the current state of the seaweed was, but would be checking for an update.
In 2015, Neblett said the NCC had collected over 40 000 cubic metres of seaweed from the island’s beaches.
That year, Barbados and other territories in the region were hard hit by the Sargassum seaweed, which covered beaches in thick smelly mounds.
At that time, the NCC purchased two Cherrington beach cleaners to help clean up the seaweed.
Yesterday, at Bath Beach in St John, NCC beach foreman Elsie Beckles said that in recent weeks the seaweed had been coming in fairly often. However, she added, beach-goers had not been complaining about it. (AD)
