Villages ‘need to help’ with child rearing

THE SAYING that it takes a village to raise a child is an old proverb, but it’s one that the director of PAREDOS (Parent Education for Development in Barbados), Sheila Stuart, believes should still hold sway.

The recently appointed director is calling for more parents to seek the help of people in their communities to assist in the care of their children.

She acknowledged, however, that values which existed in the past that saw godparents or elders in the neighbourhood taking care of other people’s children, had declined.

She said those interactions were important. (TG)
