Caution for trade unions

A FORMER TRADE unionist is cautioning Barbados’ four major trade unions about calling out their members for industrial action.

In fact, Hartley Reid, the former first vice-president of the Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados (CTUSAB), believes that those trade unions would be doing workers an injustice.hartley-reid

The Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU), the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), the Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) and the Barbados Secondary Teachers Union (BSTU) have threatened to call out its members in protest against Government’s decision to raise the National Social Responsibility Levy (NSRL) from two per cent to ten per cent.

But speaking during yesterday’s Astor B. Watts Democratic Labour Party Lunchtime Lecture at the party’s George Street, St Michael, headquarters, Reid said the trade unions needed to proceed with caution. (RB)
