KEEPING FOREIGN EXCHANGE in Barbados and generating business in The City have been identified as two key reasons to allow locals access to duty-freeing shopping.

Providing special areas that give Barbadians the same access to duty-free shopping that visitors enjoy is a move president of the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), Eddy Abed welcomes.

“I am extremely hopeful and optimistic about it. I think the potential is huge, not only for Barbadians but I think we will get a greater spend from tourists because currently the spend from our tourists is woefully low as compared with the other major destinations in the Caribbean.”

He was hopeful Bridgetown would be identified as one of the first trial zones and suggested such a development could enhance the City’s prospects of returning to the vibrant hub for retail shopping. (GC)
