PV retrofit to save US$16m

THE RETROFITTING OF 13 public buildings with solar photovoltaic systems (PVs) is expected to yield over US$16 million in benefits.

This was revealed yesterday by Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for Energy and Telecommunications Senator Darcy Boyce during a signing ceremony for a public sector Smart Energy programme.

Boyce said that the programme, being undertaken by local company Solar Watt, would cost US$5.5 million.

Among those buildings to benefit from the installation of PVs are the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Transport and Works, Treasury Building, Forensics Services Centre, Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Conference Centre, Barbados Community College, Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic, National Housing Corporation, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Frank Walcott Building, Grantley Adams International Airport, and the Barbados Port Inc.
