Teachers’ unions unaware of commission

The announcement that a Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) will be rolled out on October 16 seems to have caught the two teachers’ unions unawares.

Head of the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union (BSTU), Mary Redman, said she was “surprised” to hear of the establishment of the TSC since there was no “in-depth” consultation with the unions on areas like who should sit on it.

“Certainly we would want persons who are connected to education and the teaching profession. There were a myriad of concerns that we had . . . . We certainly envisaged that there would be much more dialogue . . . .There has been a dearth of negotiation and consultation and dialogue with teacher trade unions in this country and we have seen the resulting chaos in education, because teacher trade unions have been left out at every stage,” she pointed out.

Redman said she had no idea how the TSC will function, and how it was structured. (YB)
