They are a special group – born on the same day that Barbados celebrates its nationhood. They are the Independence Babies and throughout November, the NATION will be taking a look back at Independence Babies through the years. Do you recognise anyone you know?

This story was originally published on December 1, 2009.

ELEVEN BABIES – including seven girls – wrote their names on history’s pages yesterday when they were born at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on the island’s 43rd anniversary of Independence.

The boys got things started, when Natalie Lyder gave birth to seven-pound, nine-ounce Daveeon Lyder at 12:53 a.m., her third child. She also has four-year-old Shadon Lyder and Shaquon Lyder, who is three.

Although she was thrilled at her new addition to the family, she said this one would be her last.

“I never had too much pain with the others. This is the first time I had painful contractions. After all of that I think that’s the last,” she added.

Although her little one was healthy, he was being monitored in the Neo-natal Unit after ingesting a substance during delivery.

Just about two hours later, Coranie Davis-Chandler delivered her first child, daughter Shauna Chandler who entered the world at 2:41 a.m.

The 25-year-old was accompanied by her husband Shawn Chandler, who tried to help her through the pain of childbirth.

Zacia Moore was the third baby to be born on Independence Day at the hospital. Her mother, 17-year-old Janelle Auguste, said she had a “rough time”, and would not like to have another.

Zacia and Shauna were two of the eight girls who were born yesterday.

Janelle Quimby, Kristina Franklyn, Tammy Greene, Laurell Charles and Christine Headley also gave birth to girls.

Along with Lyder, Keisha Leacock, Krystle Patrick and Lisa Agard delivered baby boys. (NATION ARCHIVES)
