The National Sports Council’s Inter-Parish road tennis action moved to Silver Hill on Wednesday night, with blazing competition ensuring that the fans did not miss the “A” class players on court.
Among the women, the highly ranked Abigail Haynes turned out for St Joseph and crushed St Michael’s Susan Scantlebury 21-10, 21-9, with Scantlebury barely escaping a double sow.
St Lucy’s Cherene Ward was also in the pig business as she halted former table tennis player Julia Morris-Young 21-8, 21-15. Morris-Young had looked like making a match of the clash before Ward regained her focus to close out in straight sets.
St Lucy veterans also took home a victory, with the tiebreaker being needed to advance over Christ Church. Newly adopted St Lucy resident Deighton “Pa” Roach defeated Winslow Birkett 21-13, 21-19 before Terrence Prescott evened the contest for Christ Church by beating Anthony “Baku” Simmons 21-15, 21-19.
In the puzzling tiebreaker contested between the two losing opponents, Simmons beat Birkett 21-14.
One of the highlights of the night was the performance of Ellerslie schoolboy Terry Rollock, who unreeled a plethora of shots in representing St Thomas to come from a game down to beat St James Justin Hinds 12-21, 21-19, 21-14. That was a boys’ 14-18 clash.
The chopping southpaw Matthew Grazette (at left) also starred for St Michael as they stunned St Philip in a “B” Class battle. Grazette had dropped the first game to Alexander “Fyah” Clarke at 19 before surging to put out Clarke 21-16, 21-18.
Darius “Baracus” Gaskin ensured the win for St Michael as he got past Ryan Hall 21-14, 12-21, 21-14. (KB)
