CASTRIES – The Speaker of the St Lucia parliament, Leonne Theodore-John has confirmed that she has resigned her post effective from March 1, this year.

Theodore-John resignation comes after nearly two years in the position. She said she is hoping to take up a diplomatic posting at the St Lucia High Commission in London.

“I need to say that it is not a post created for me – it is a post that has been in existence and was last filled by Mr (Albert) Fregis during the last labour party administration and since the UWP administration came into office in 2016, the post has not been filled,” she told St Lucia Times online publication.

Theodore-John is expected to take up her new position before the end of March.

Last month, Theodore-John, an attorney, said she is aware of rumours that she is being pressured by the government to step down from office.

“I’m not a social media person, but I’m hearing it too. I’m here, I am the Speaker. Unless and until I decide to resign or the government or whoever moves a motion, I am still the Speaker of the House of Assembly,” she told reporters ahead of the Parliament first meeting for this year.

There have been persistent reports that Theodore-John has been asked to resign over concerns about the way she has dealt with members of both sides of Parliament.

Theodore-John was elected Speaker on July 12, 2016, following the June 12, 2016 general election.

She previously served as President from April 2010 to December 2011. (CMC)
