Flogging is the act of punishment for a breach of law or code of behaviour used to correct disobedience. It is performed by beating the body of the person found guilty of breaking this law with special implements such as rods and whips.
New UNICEF representative Dr Aloys Kamuragiye has called for the banishment of corporal punishment in Barbados, and she is supported by chairperson of the National Committee Monitoring the Rights of the Child, retired magistrate Faith Marshall-Harris.
Dr Kamuragiye explained that Barbados’ profile was assessed on survival and thriving, learning, protection, environment and fair chance.
Barbados is a Christian society, which means that all our core values, principles and profiles are founded on the spoken and written pure, unadulterated Word of Almighty God found in The Bible. The Bible teaches the following:
• He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him (Proverbs 13:24).
• Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him (Proverbs 22:15).
• Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you do punish him with the rod, he will not die. Punish him with the rod and save his soul from death (Proverbs 23: 13-14).
• The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother (Proverbs 29:15).
• No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it (Hebrews 12:11).
No Parliament or other institution or person in Barbados should pass laws or pronounce regulations that are superior to God’s laws.
Let us obey God. We must choose Him and reject every voice that is contrary to His will.
