Family court coming

Barbados could soon have its first hybrid family law court, which would make life easier for mothers seeking maintenance for their children.

That was intimated on Monday by Prime Minister Mia Mottley as she delivered the feature address at a two-day gender equality workshop at the Radisson Aquatica Resort, Aquatic Gap, St Michael, hosted by the Caribbean Institute of Women in Leadership.

“Some fundamental things in our society have to change,” Mottley said, while suggesting that good choices would be extremely important for Caribbean governments seeking gender equality.

“We have the power of choice. Choice will determine whether this Government would spend money to create a single hybrid family law court that precludes the discrimination that exists now, where mothers of single-parent children must go and stand up outside at a magistrate’s court and wait their turn to be called in, as if you were taking an audit of stock, to determine if you have access to funds or not,” she said.
