Farmers are stealing water from the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) through illegal connections. The BWA recently uncovered two cases of crop scammers and in one instance, they suspect the farmer had been utilising the water illegally for close to five years.
These two cases are, however, not isolated but represent a worrisome trend, a source at the BWA revealed.
Over the years, officials said they have discovered crop farmers, livestock farmers and even individuals cultivating marijuana plants in remote areas, cheating the BWA.
The source said workmen descended on a field at Ashford, St John, last week where they found an illegal connection to the main on a two-acre field planted with lettuce, cabbage, and tomatoes. (MB)
